Dog LickingI have a neighbor who has a large Dalmation. If you get within a foot of him, he sticks his tongue out for a quick lick of whatever piece of skin he can reach. This excessive dog licking drives me crazy! Why do dogs lick people and how can you make dogs stop licking?

First, let’s think about why dogs lick. There are several reasons why your dog licks you:

  • He may be telling you that he wants your attention and that he likes you.
  • You may have “trained” him that when he licks you, he gets a reward
  • He thinks you like it and he’s trying make you happy. Or, the licking just makes him happy. Do you know any people who just like to hug and kiss everyone? Some dogs are the same way.
  • He likes the taste of your skin, or a cream or lotion that you wear.
  • This might sound gross, but it’s possible that you just need to take a bath, and he’s helping you out. Dogs like salty, sweaty skin. Yuk!

So how do you make your dog stop licking you?

Cat Ear MitesIt’s estimated that over 50% of cats carry ear mites. If your cat is scratching her ears excessively, your cat might be an ear mite carrier. What are ear mites and how are they treated without the expensive vet bill?

What are ear mites and what do they do?

Ear mites are tiny little bug-like creatures that crawl around in your cat’s ears. If there is one ear mite in your cat’s ear, there are probably thousands of ear mites. They dine on your cat’s ear wax. As your cat’s ear becomes irritated by the ear mites, the ear’s lining secretes serum from blood in the ear. If you’ve noticed a black, scab-like formation in the ear, it’s a combination of the ear wax, serum, and ear mite poop. Gross!

If you own a yorkshire terrier, you probably know they’re not the easiest dogs to house train. How to stop yorkies peeing in the house is probably the most common problem yorkie owners face.

If you are working on housebreaking a yorkshire terrier, let’s start here… As much as you don’t want to hear this, I’ve seen people do everything right to house train a yorkie, but the yorkie never fully catches on. However, that is not the norm. I would guess that one out of a thousand yorkies will always have accidents inside. Just about every yorkie can be taught to not pee or poop in your house. You just need to use the right techniques.

Are you shopping for a yorkshire terrier? Do you want to know if your your yorkie is “up to par” for breed standards. The AKC publishes breed standards for all dog breeds. Below are the published AKC standards for Yorkshire Terriers.

Keep this in mind. This really only matters if you are breeding your yorkie. If you’re just looking for a great pet, don’t put so much emphasis on the AKC guidelines. Yorkies are the best pets I have ever owned. I own 2, and one of them is show quality. The other is not. But they are both great yorkies.

Here is the Official Breed Standard for the Yorkshire Terrier from the AKC:

If you have been, or are considering, shopping for a teacup yorkshire terrier, there is something you should know first. There is no such thing as “teacup yorkshire terrier.”

Yes, there are yorkies that are very small (under 3 lbs.), but there is no official weight variety called a Teacup Yorkie. A yorkie is a yorkie is a yorkie. Period.

The average yorkshire terrier size is 3.5-7 lbs. Where did the terms Teacup Yorkie, Tiny Toy Yorkie, etc. come from? These are terms created by irresponsible breeders who are trying to get as much money from you as possible. These smaller yorkies can often cost 50% to 100% more to buy than normal size yorkies.

Yorkie PuppyI have 2 Yorkshire Terriers. Without a doubt, Yorkies are the best pets I have ever owned. Both of them came from good Yorkie breeders with good reputations. They have completely different personalities, but fit perfectly into my family and my lifestyle.

Many people are tempted with the newspaper ads or internet ads saying, “Yorkie Puppy for Sale.” But choosing a great yorkshire terrier puppy is the most important first step in becoming a yorkie owner. So how to you choose a good yorkie puppy for your family?
